Why I Am Voting for Senator Barack Obama

November 3, 2008
Yes He Can!

Yes He Can!

On November 4th, 2008 I will be voting for president for only the third time in my life. Unfortunately, the candidate that I supported in both 2000 and 2004 did not end up becoming President. The person who did win the office, in both cases, will be leaving the Presidency with many problems for our next leader to face – the war and the economy are top issues which will need to be addressed immediately. In this election, I will be voting for Senator Barack Obama because I feel that he has what it takes to led our nation in tackling the many issues of the day. If you are unsure where Obama stands on the issues that you can about, you can read Obama’s entire Blueprint for Change here. There are many reasons that I believe that you should vote for Barack Obama, but here are a few reasons that he has my vote.

He will end the war responsibly

On May 1st of 2003 President George W. Bush declared “Mission Accomplished” in Iraq. Since that time, not only have I been deployed to Baghdad, but hundreds of thousands of men and women have been sent overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the time since the President’s declaration 4,050 people have died in service of our great country. This number includes a fellow solider from my deployed unit, 612th EN BN, SGT Jeremy Hodge. In addition, there have been well over 100,000 soldiers wounded in combat and many more families separated and strained. The war began as a measure to protect America from a future attacks, a preemptive strike against Saddam Hussein’s evil empire. The war continues to rage on despite his removal and execution. Still many men and women continue to serve and risk their lives for a war that should have been finished years ago. Barack Obama, however, has made a pledge to end this war, responsibly, and focus our military efforts on the enemies who have sought to destroy our country. The Bush doctrine has failed, now is the time to change our strategy and try a new approach in the war on terrorism – diplomacy. As a former member of the Armed Forces and veteran of a foreign war, I understand the need for America to protect herself. I also understand, however, that we must act responsibly and use force as a last resort in solving problems abroad. With his stance against the war, when it was unpopular, I believe Barack Obama has what it takes to end the war and protect our country.

He will protect our families

As a father and husband, nothing is more important than my family. With each passing day I am worried about the future for my family. The soaring price of gas is pale when you consider it against the rising price of food or the astronomical price of health care. The last few months have been a roller coaster ride on Wall Street and many people face the fear of losing their homes. Barack Obama has what it takes to protect our families. His mantra of change from the bottom-up resonates because people are tired of turning to government to solve all of our problems. While I belive the government should play a role in the problems of the day, only me and you can start that change. Obama will finish the job by providing more people with reliable healthcare, protecting American jobs, and focusing on empowering our future through education. I proudly served my country, and in turn, my country helped provide an education for me. Obama will continue this tradition, with great vigor, for those who will serve their country in the military or PeaceCorp. His plan for education includes less standardized testing for elementary students and a voluntary universal pre-school system. This will give our future more time to learn about pushing America to greater heights in the future.

He has bought excitement to the political process

My grandmother, Queen Esther Seay, is 85 years old and will be voting for the first time in her life. You might wonder why she has never voted, but as an African American woman in the deep South voting never really seemed to help her situation or the situation of those around her. She witnessed first hand the evils of Jim Crow; lynchings, segeration, and voter suppression were commonplace for many years for my Grandmother. No matter who was in office, very little changed. This year, however, she will be exercising here right, as an American to vote for the President of the United States. She will be joining millions of people who will be voting for the first time. Obama is the first person in my lifetime, that has inspired so many people to be interested in the political process. Many people have compared Obama to JFK for this reason, because he represented a change from the status quo. Unlike McCain, he is not a career Washington insider who is used to the same old stuff. He is a person that posseses numerous life experiences that will enable him to be an effective leader. Barack Obama has inspired so many because he is the Rocky of this election. He has been an underdog (despite his strong poll numbers) for many reasons; he is an African American, he is young, he lacks political experience, he has a funny name and many other reasons. Yet, he has remained the course and driven home a message of change.

Overall, I am proud to witness history in the making. Barack Obama will be the first African American to hold the office of the President in a country that is not too far removed from slavery and Jim Crow. Our country does have its problems, but we have progressed so far to in have this possiblity upon us. While I understand that Barack Obama will not be a perfect President (who was?), he is a step in the right direction for the country I love. For these reasons, I will be voting for Barack Obama and I encourage YOU to do the same.

The (Best) Worse Negative Political Campaigns

October 22, 2008

Today as I watched television, I endured a large amount of negative political advertising. Most of the negativity was aimed at political opponents and/or issues that I will be voting for on November 4th (will that day please come already). One thing struck me as odd, why do politicians continue to utilize negative campaigning? This type of campaigning, has been proven very effective especially when the attacker is weaker (or has less to offer) than the victim.

This got me to thinking, what are the worst negative political campaigns of all-time?

The Daisy Ad

The has to be one of the most chilling negative campaigns (considering the times) ever. Lyndon Johnson was able to pander fear in order to defeat Barry Goldwater in 1964

This has to be the most effective ad ever. With the rise of the Soviet Union at the time, this was a realistic fear which scared people into voting.

John McCain’s Black baby

Shortly after John McCain beat George Bush in the 2000 Republican primary in New Hampshire, a whisper campaign was started in South Carolina. The campaign was spread via a phony poll that asked Republican voters “Whether or not they would vote for McCain if he fathered a illegitmate Black child.” The simple accusation was enough to turn the tide and power a Bush win in South Carolina, and eventually, the Republican nomination.

McCain’s whisper campaign against Barack Obama most likely got it roots from this event. The Bush administration honed in on McCain’s dark-skinned adopted child to plant the seed of doubt in voters minds. One of many instances were race has been used to discredit someone.

The Willie Horton ad

George Bush Sr invoked this commercial to defeat Michael Dukakis in the 1988 presidential election.  It helped power Dukakis defeat as many envisioned him as soft on crime.

This was an effective use of many Americans worse nightmare, the Black felon. Like the daisy ad, this preys on Americans inner most fear, that of insecurity. Associating this fear with a candidate helped dismantle the credibility that Dukakis had built. Would this ad had been effective if the individual was another race? It played on stereotypes, and people instantly made the connection.

Swift Boat

After 2004’s presidential election, negative attacks earned a new name “Swift Boating”. Kerry’s military service was attacked and he was accused of being unpatriotic. Many people believe this is what powered Bush Jr into his second term.

Overall, the campaign was effective because it discredited Kerry’s ability to handle the war in Iraq, at least to the common man. He was seen as a traitor, and some one that the American people could not trust.

Hopefully, in the next two weeks neither presidential canadidate will resort to negative campaign to bolster their chances of winning. What about taking a page from product/service advertising? I truly believe that people want messages of hope, not fear. The daisy ad, in my opinion was the (best) worse political ad because it connected with people’s innermost fears, harm upon our children. Now take the poll and tell me what you think!

Rewind Wednesday: The Worst Company in America

September 25, 2008

In light of the tumultuous state of our economy, one of my recent posts about The Worst Company in America, once again comes to light. With the demise (and subsequent rise) of AIG, Freddie Mac, and Fannie Mae many people are left blaming the companies for the country’s economic woes. I am sure that many will view these as “bad” companies just because they failed and are earning tax payer dollars. A few months ago, consumers were asked to pick the Worst Company in America.

Even their logo was pretty bad

Even their logo was pretty bad

There many companies that deserve the dubious award for being the worst company in America, but in the end Countrywide Home Loans was awarded cursed as the worst company in the America. While consumers have voted this company as the worst company, is it just a branding problem?

It is amazing to witness how companies, which deliver great products and/or services, will be viewed in such a different light based on their branding efforts. How can Wal-Mart be one of the most successful companies in American history, but one of the most hated by consumers? Maybe Patrick Hanlon was right in Primal Branding (great book, book review coming soon), great brands simply need “non-believers” to reinforce the relevance of the belief system. I guess it is impossible for a brand to be universally loved (how many Apple haters are out there?).

When thinking about my own personal brand, the single most important part of branding building is disaster recovery, and this is where I think Countrywide Home Loans went wrong.

Branding Disaster – The Worst Company in America

July 17, 2008

Have you ever dealt with a firm that you believed to be the worst company in America? In branding circles, we often cite companies that are branded well; Google, Disney, Harley-Davidson, and Nike are a few companies that may come to mind when you think of a good brand (company). What companies come to mind when you think of the worst company in America? Well, there is no need to fret as the people at The Consumerist have provided tournament to decide which company is the worst in America.

Who is the worst company in America?

Who is the worst company in America?

The worst companies were initially picked by the websites readers and each week the worst company advances. Similar to the NCAA’s March Madness, it started off with 64 companies (why didn’t they have the play-in?) that were assigned ranks by the number of votes they received. After many months of companies “battling” it out, four companies have risen (or fell) to the final four; Walmart, Comcast, Countrywide, and Diebold. It will be interesting to see which company will earn the title of the “Worst Company in America” (and the infamous golden “dog pile” award). One thing is for certain, each company has suffered massive branding disasters. As time progresses, it will be interesting to see which of these companies will continue to survive. Walmart has already begun the process of shedding its image with rebranding, what about the other companies?

What is the worst company in the world to you?

Naming Your Child For Success

July 30, 2008

As a parent, you can never under-estimate your ability to influence you child’s life. Decisions that are made today will have an effect on the child’s entire life. The first major decision parents face is what to name their child and this decision could have a large impact on your child’s future success.

This is the most basic lesson in personal branding, but many people largely take it for granted. Recently, Neil Patel a blogger at Quick Sprout, posed the question to his readers How Do You Name A Baby For Success? There were a number of responses and it became clear that your name is a large part of your brand.

Think about some of the biggest names in the media today, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Paris Hilton, Brad Pitt, Angelia Jolie have strong names that separate them from the pack. I would argue that a large part of their success comes from a strong name that stands out. Of course, similar boring names have also achieved great success, Will Smith in particular, comes to mind. The question, however, is how important is your name for success?

Would you remember Mark Twain if he was just Samuel Clemens? Would you laugh at Whoopi Goldberg if her name was Caryn Johnson? These two icons realized the importance of a name that communicated their personal brands. According to the Social Security Administration, the top baby names of 2007 are Jacob and Emily. In 1907 John and Mary were the most popular names names in America (James was number three in 1907, and out of the top 20 in 2007, go figure). A great name can go along way in what you end up becoming.

While your name alone will not guarantee your success, it will go a long way as your child grows to become a professional. Parents should keep this in mind when naming their children. What name would best reflect this person in the future? Will naming your child Apple or Seven actually improve the chances of your child succeeding? Probably not. A strong name, however, can be the first building block of developing the personal brand of your child. Just ask my son, James Seay Jr. (-:

How You Can Change the World

July 10, 2008

How would you like to completely change the world? As a child, I often dreamed about making a difference in the world. My dreams always centered around me ruling the world with an iron fist. This view change when my professor challenged me to change the world one person at a time. While world domination would be nice, I have discovered another way to change the world, with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has been in existence for over 100 and has one mission, to improve the lives of youth through mentoring. The value proposition is simple, people connect and lives are enhanced. According to the BBBS website, your time directly contributes to the development of America’s future:

  • More confident in their schoolwork performance
  • Able to get along better with their families
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school.

The organization has helped power many youth to more successful, fulfilling lives and it is much easier than world domination.

My time with BBBS in the past was very fulfilling, and I am looking forward to connecting with a Columbus area 8th grader through a new BBBS program called Project Mentor.

Don’t follow my foolish dreams of the past, world domination is so not cool. I encourage you to change the world by dedicating your spare time to our future, the youth.

Dr. Helen L. Brown — American Hero

July 8, 2008

No words can express the love and compassion Dr. Brown has had for people everywhere. To know her is to love her. She will be greatly missed. My heart is heavy but I know the praise in heaven is reigning out, a true warrior of God has come home. Thank you Dr. Brown for living a life of sacrifice so we all can have another example of what true holy living is all about. My life will never be the same from knowing Dr. Helen L. Brown

-Lionel Dwayne Brock

Dr. Helen L. Brown

On Friday, July 3rd my Grandmother, Dr. Helen L. Brown took her rightful place in heaven. Although many have (and will) mourn her passing, she truly made the world a better place while she was here. Over the span of 80 years, she established herself as a faithful servant to God and those who came into contact with her. Dr. Brown embodied many of the traits that are found in a successful leader; strength, compassion, and mercy. Yet, her personal brand is rooted in two words, faith and love.

Faith is defined on “belief that is not based on proof” and my Grandmother lived her life based on her faith in God. This faith, however, was not for the pulpit alone. It extended to many, many people across the globe. Her faith in God lead her to change the lives of people who lacked faith and hope.

Love is one of the most confusing words in the English language. With such a wide variety of meaning, it is difficult to understand what love really is, unless you knew my Grandmother. Not many people glow with love, but Dr. Brown did. As Lionel mentioned, to know her is to love her and many people felt the same.

I am proud to have been in the presence of Dr. Helen L. Brown in my short time on Earth. Her faith and love serve as a wonderful example of an American hero. I will always miss her smile, her advice, and her touch. You will always be in my heart, and I know you are looking down smiling on me. I love you Grandma.

Where Did Your Stimulus Check Go?

June 5, 2008

Nationwide millions of people are rejoicing over the “economic stimulus package” that is meant to boost our economy. While the jury is still out on whether or not the economy will recover from this shot in the arm, one thing is clear, people are spending money (in most cases) on things that they want.

Whether you are for or against this gimmick plan, one thing is clear money is going somewhere. If you are anything like me, you probably want to know what other people are purchasing with the money they received. There is a neat little blog called How I Spent My Stimulus that details what exactly Americans are spending their stimulus checks on. Some people invested, other got out of debt, and some just plain wasted it, but every story is interesting. I decided to join the movement and posted what I spent my stack of cash on as well. Go ahead, post your story and tell the world!

Just remember, spend wisely and have a smile or two at the cartoons below (-:
